Shopping at Montage Antiques

You are joining me in one of my happy places; Montage Antiques in Millerton, Upstate New York. I have been coming here for years, and it's an incredible place to source vintage pieces.

Tips for Antique Shopping

  • Look out for the more unusual pieces. The beauty of shopping for antiques is that no one else will have the same thing as you, so really embrace a piece's unique nature.
  • Visit antique shops regularly to take advantage of the high turnover of items. Things are often inexpensive, so they get sold quickly and replaced with another drop of stock.
  • Talk to the antique dealers and ask questions; they will have an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise, and you'll be able to learn a great deal from them.
  • Think about how you can juxtapose the antique nature of a piece with a new, modern setting - and how this would look.
  • Bring cohesion to your collections of antiques by choosing a theme. This could be a colour or a similar pattern running through a grouping of objects that are from a different time or country but are united by this one similarity.
