Thomasina Miers’ sloe ginger margaritas

2 MIN READ

A lovely way to use sloe gin in the winter, this is a thoroughly delicious take on the classic margarita.

The addition of sloes and ginger to these margaritas means they’re as suited to the depths of winter as to the heat of summer. Inspired by her time spent in Mexico City where she opened a cocktail bar, Thomasina incorporates her expert mixology knowledge into this delicious tequila cocktail. Experimenting with the balance of sweet, savoury and citrus such as shiso leaves and ginger, Thomasina excites the taste buds with Mexican-inspired margaritas and mezcal.

Make these for new and old friends to really get a party going. These cocktails will provide a delicious zesty flavour and lift festive spirits.

Sloe ginger margarita

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

  • 60ml tequila
  • 30ml sloe gin
  • 30ml fresh lime
  • 12.5ml Cointreau
  • 15ml sugar syrup or ginger syrup

Instructions:

Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass, add ice and shake vigorously. You can normally tell when it’s done as it starts condensing inside the cocktail shaker. Lots of ice is necessary so it doesn’t melt and distort the wonderful mix you’ve just made!

If you decide to make your own sugar syrup (equal quantities of sugar and water, a hundred grams of sugar and a hundred millilitres of water) simply simmer the water with slices of ginger to make a delicious, fiery ginger syrup. This sweetness will be countered by the Cointreau to balance the flavours.

Garnish with a wheel of lime or a berry. You could also get jazzy with hibiscus or dried ginger powder salt rims for the perfect accompaniment.
