From the Lesson Workbook

Developing a Style and Philosophy

A style usually starts before you even realise it - in childhood, being taken to gardens, National Trust places and old houses. Those early impressions stay with you. We've always been drawn not just to plants, but to architecture and the whole setting. Places like Sissinghurst and Stourhead are certainly influences. And we're constantly inspired by other designers, nurseries, and the wider gardening world - it's not a competitive thing; it's more like a shared curiosity.

We've also always loved grand historic gardens - Villa d'Este in Italy, for example, with its Renaissance fountains and grottos. But the fun thing is you can borrow a tiny piece of that drama and make it work in your garden. A little trough with water, a stone with holes, a miniature moment - it doesn't need to cost much or take up much space to feel special.

A Few Principles We Live By

  • Keep things practical - if it's a nuisance to maintain, it stops being a pleasure.
  • Think "right plant, right place" - choose plants that will naturally enjoy your conditions.
  • Allow architecture to breathe.
  • Experiment and don't be afraid to break rules, but really look and observe your space properly before doing anything.
  • Remember a garden constantly evolves and is never finished.
