Layered Stencilling on Furniture
Once you've mastered the very simple basics of stencilling, there are so many ways you can use it in your home.
Layered Stencilling
Firstly, paint the piece of furniture in a background colour. Then, choose three different colours: a light, a medium and a dark. It works best if these are tones within a similar palette. I'd recommend trying out different colours on a piece of paper first to see what you like. Work across the piece with the stencil and experiment with layering the tones in different ways. Once you're finished, apply wax all over to seal it.
The Importance of Experimenting
As with all furniture painting, the joy of stencilling comes from simply having a go and trying different things. My best piece of advice is to not be too precious. Any mistakes can always be corrected by painting over and starting again, or you might even surprise yourself and discover a new technique or style!
