Rita breaks down what makes a great laundry room.
The better positioned your laundry room is, the better your house will run.
In family houses, consider putting the laundry room close to the bedrooms so that the laundry is near to where it'll be coming and going from. It is not necessarily the most practical thing to have them in the basement or near the kitchen.
When a laundry room is far from the kitchen, I like to put in a kettle and coffee machine. They are especially useful if it is near the bedrooms - it is nice to be able to make coffee upstairs in the morning before venturing downstairs.
I have used floor tiles from Popham Design in my laundry, as well as a lot of tongue-and-groove, which disguises a wall of airing cupboards.
Consider hanging your ironing board on the wall rather than struggling to keep it in a cupboard. For laundry rooms with more space, place an ironing table in the middle of the room which becomes incredibly useful for folding sheets. Miele does an ironing press, which makes dealing with things like sheets, tablecloths and napkins very easy.
A laundry maid is a must. They are easily available from stores such as Pulley Maid.
I recommend brass rails running the length of a smaller laundry room which provide invaluable space for hanging things to dry. I also suggest using a low-voltage heating bar that runs along the skirting or heated flooring for laundry rooms that double up as boot rooms.
