For Rita, china and glass is an exciting way to add layers to a design. In this lesson she advises the best way to build a collection, as well as why buying good second-hand china is a wise addition to your collection.

From the Lesson Workbook

China & Glass

Try not to buy stuff that you don't really want. Have a good base in china, as there will be breakages. Use shared colours to develop a palette: once you have that the different formats all go together. Build your collection over time. 23cm is a universal plate size that can be used for multiple meals and occasions.

A china room and stunning glass and tableware are both showcased at The Conran Shop. Carlo Moretti's tumblers and Ceramiche Fasano plates with vegetables painted on them are my favourites.

North Farm

The china in my collection is a combination of pale green cabbage bowls and plates made by Daylesford, which also makes good everyday glass and other great homewares. In addition to a darker green Bordallo cabbage plate from Nina Campbell and her classic blue 'Sprig' breakfast china, alongside cream Gien dishes, as well as Marie Daâge breakfast cups for my large morning brew, I also added pieces from Nina Campbell.

I recommend:

  • Astier de Villatte
  • Marie Daage
  • Daylesford
  • Mud Australian Porcelain
  • New Craftsmaker
  • Davda mugs by Rita Konig
  • Nason Moretti
