From years of experience, Rita explains how to get the best out of your decorators, from keeping a paint schedule to spotting a roller or brush finish.

Working with Paint

I prefer to use a brush to paint or a sprayer. Matt emulsion can be applied fast and easily using a roller, making it the quickest and cheapest option to apply paint. It's not without faults. All rollers leave orange peel effects, some more so than others, but they are all present in various degrees.

Matt emulsion is typically used on walls, however, it scuffs easily and should not be used on staircases - vacuum cleaners, suitcases, and smudges are all enemies of matt emulsion. I believe that an oil-based eggshell is ideal for the walls and is more practical in high traffic areas, although your builder may disagree with you.

Mylands offers an alkyd matt that you may use for woodwork; Papers and Paints combine its colours with Mylands bases to give you more options. Whites and greys are the most difficult to pick. Architectural Colors are available in a variety of ratings ranging from I to V at Paint Library. Update and keep a paint schedule, laid out as below.

Subtle Pinks

I am a big fan of dirty pinks. Some of my favourite dirty pinks are; 'Cuisse de Nymph Emue' by Edward Bulmer, 'Greville Pink' by Adam Bray, Farrow & Ball 'Pink Ground' or 'Parsonage Pink' by Papers & Paints.

Expensive Paint vs Cheap Paint

Personally, I prefer pricier paints. Cheaper paints, in general, have a flatter appearance and are of lower quality. High-quality paints are typically more expensive. It is always a good idea to invest in higher quality paint for your bedroom and living room. These paints typically require fewer coats and produce a richer, deeper colour. I would recommend using a higher quality paint even when using white paint. You'll need to use double the amount of paint and won't achieve equal coverage. High-quality paints cover more evenly, require fewer coats, save time, and are more durable. I choose white paints from the Paint Library's range of Architectural Colours, which are rated I-IV, making my life easier.

Your Assignment

Choose a colour - for example, a paint colour that you like. Then consider other pieces that may share flashes of that colour: a picture, a lampshade, a plant, a light fitting: it may be anything. Don't coordinate too much though.
