Annie introduces her inimitable chalk paint, and talks through the wide variety of ways you can use it to add colour and pattern into your home.
The chalk paint I have developed can be used on a huge array of surfaces - and is certainly not just limited to wooden furniture. In this lesson, I hope to inspire you to think about adding colour and pattern to many other surfaces in your home.
One of my favourites: I'm hugely inspired by Swedish, American and European painted furniture. I love to get really creative with something that's seen better days and transform it into something that brings me a lot of joy.
You may be surprised to hear that chalk paint can be used to paint and dye fabrics too, and it's also great for cushions, lampshades, wall hangings and upholstery. With fabric painting, it's worth keeping in mind that it's most effective when the colour you're painting is darker than the original material.
Chalk paint works really well on metal, and it's wonderful for adding colour to old galvanised steel pieces. Shiny metals, too, respond beautifully to being painted, and the chalk paint will give it a lovely matte finish.
Any ceramics can be painted - lamp bases, for example, can be totally transformed. Terracotta plant pots are also a great paint project.
Most outdoor furniture can be painted, but sadly, it won't last forever. Be sure to seal your project correctly with wax to give it the best chance of surviving the elements. Cement and terracotta are more reliable outdoor surfaces to paint.
Because chalk paint is suitable for so many surfaces, you can also paint pieces composed of mixed materials.
Teak wood is too oily to paint, as are certain plastics.
Start with something fairly small, but not too small, as you won't feel that joyful accomplishment otherwise! A side table would be a nice place to begin.
One thing I would avoid as your first project is a chair. Chairs are rather laborious and best to tackle when you've got a bit of experience under your belt!
