The design process is often just as much about logistics and planning as it is about creativity. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to work out a timeline for ordering and sourcing.

From the Lesson Workbook

Step Four: Selecting Fabrics and Furniture

After the palette for a room has been established, it's important to work out a timeline for ordering everything, as well as the furniture you need to source.

  • Once I've decided on the fabrics and materials for a room, I will call the shops and suppliers to find out the lead times for each item. I'll then begin ordering everything, starting with the items that have the longest lead time.
  • Sourcing secondhand and antique pieces makes for a much more interesting room. Focus on the shape and quality of sofas and armchairs rather than the fabric, as they can always be reupholstered.
  • If you're not able to find the perfect piece of furniture for a room, approach local makers to see whether they're able to create something for you as a bespoke piece.
  • Always check the measurements of items you are buying, and refer to your floor plan to work out whether something will fit.

Your Assignment

If you are following along with a live project, now is the time to work out your own timeline for ordering your materials and working out the sorts of furniture pieces you might be looking for.
