Curtains have the power to completely transform a room, if they’re designed and hung correctly. Miles offers his top tips for making sure yours are a triumph.

From the Lesson Workbook

Hanging Curtains

As well as having the ability to completely transform a room, curtains are also a wonderful decorative element to have fun with.

The Difference Curtains Can Make

Curtains are a very useful tool in interior design; they can help to make a room feel taller by drawing the eye up and elongating a window. They're also incredibly helpful if you want to hide unattractive windows.

They offer privacy and a sense of cosiness – especially important if you live in a city or on a busy street. Drawing them as the evening closes in, and turning on the warm glow of table lamps, provides the ultimate sense of home.

Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Consider what is right and appropriate for the window; extravagant ballroom curtains need large windows, whereas a light linen sheer might be better for smaller windows.
  • If you want your curtains to elevate a room, opt for additional decorative features such as a valance, swag or jabot. You can also add passementerie as a finishing touch.
  • I prefer curtains to break the floor by about 1 inch, so they pool a little but not too much.
  • Choose a fabric that hangs beautifully and isn't too heavy. You want something with texture but also fluidity.
  • Think about adding curtains to enhance the contrast within your room for a more exciting scheme, through the use of colour or materials.
