From the Lesson Workbook

Designing 'Cosy Glamorous' Interiors

I have honed my own sense of style for over two decades, and have come to value a few key principles that inform my design ethos.

Important Beliefs Within My Interior Design

Incorporate an element of surprise and drama. Practicality was never very high on my priorities when I first started out as a designer, but now I have come to see the relationship between form and function as being a delicate balance; you need a bit of both to make a really captivating room.

Like fashion, interior design moves in trends – just a little more slowly. Rather than be too influenced by the trends, you should instead take stock of whether your home is designed in a way that's serving you and bringing joy. If it's not, it might be time to practise restraint and clear out to make way for the new.

Great decorating for me has always been about contrast, pairing something old with something modern and slick. I like the interest, character and authenticity that this juxtaposition provides a room.

Learn to love imperfection. Homes are made for living in, and are bound to fall victim to wear and tear over the years. Allow these blemishes to become part of a room's story – good design should give space for this.

Build a collection of things that you love, and only include items within your home that speak to you or are meaningful. Interior design is all about voicing your personality, so be true and authentic to your own sense of style.
