Miniature Living Wall

James inspires you to create your own small oasis, a beautiful miniature living wall that can live on your kitchen countertop.

Equipment Used:

  • Glass case (18cm x 13cm)
  • Tree fern panels
  • General Purpose Silicone (without an antifungal agent)
  • Aquarium super glue
  • Niwaki secateurs
  • Manzanita twig

Plants Used:

  • Leucobryum glaucum 'Bun Moss'
  • Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba'
  • Anubias barteri var. nana
  • Lilaeopsis 'Novae Zealandiae'
  • Selaginella

Lesson Summary

  • I cut a piece of tree fern panel to the size of the glass box (18x13cm).
  • As an adhesive, I have used transparent, all-purpose silicone (without an antifungal agent). Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun.
  • Take your cut-to-size tree fern panel and press it into the box.
  • Glue sections of moss to the entire tree fern panel.
  • To allow for sufficient planting depth, I recommend that the moss is trimmed at the base of each clump.
  • Manzanita wood can be bought in most aquarium supply shops.
  • I like planting intermediaries as it offers a difference in texture.
  • Using small-leaved plants sit better with the small scale of a mini project.
  • In small spaces, the number one mistake people make is trying to cram too much into them, resulting in arrangements that look messy and overwhelming.
  • No garden is a permanent structure this includes terrariums.
  • The Bun moss serves as a pincushion, to tuck things into, whilst also holding everything in place.
  • Before closing the case, make sure to give it a good mist with some mineral water.
  • A downlighter is a brilliant source of light.
  • If there is still a lot of condensation, there is probably too much water in the terrarium.
  • By leaving the container slightly ajar, it is possible to remove excess water by letting it evaporate out.
  • In terms of upkeep, if the plants get too large, I like to trim to reduce their size or remove them completely.
  • If mould grows too large, take out the sections and puff up the surrounding moss by prising it apart with tweezers.
