From the Lesson Workbook

The Living Room at Hope Hill

I've already discussed how the furniture and its layout in the living room supports how we live in it – but the drinks cabinet and our collection of artwork are also key in the success of this scheme.

  • If you've got a large piece of dark-wood furniture to decorate around, there are a few tricks to make it less heavy and imposing. Mirroring the back of a cabinet adds sparkle and light reflections. Painting part of the furniture can also work wonders to brighten its look.
  • A drinks cabinet is an important part of the success of a sociable living room. I often have mine stocked with refreshing lemonade and iced tea during the day, and then wine and cocktails in the evening – it provides a feeling of generosity and hospitality while encouraging fun and festivity.
  • When styling shelving and cabinets, include a mix of different objects that hold meaning for you, to create a relaxed and joyful display.
  • Hanging artwork and pictures in a living room is key to bringing character and personality to the space. Don't worry too much about hanging arrangements being perfect – it's these idiosyncrasies that will give your home charm.
  • When building a collection of artwork, you don't need to take it too seriously. Beautiful pieces can be found inexpensively at markets, on eBay and at antique fairs.
