The Master Bedroom at Hope Hill

We didn't have a huge budget for this room, but I've updated beautiful second-hand finds with inexpensive fabric and paint to create a bedroom that still feels luxurious.

• I love four-poster beds, and I propose them to all my clients. They're brilliant for adding architecture into a room and giving a feeling of romance.
• The composition of the bed in my master bedroom is pretty similar to the bed in the guest rooms and follows the same formula.
• I used seersucker material from the local dressmaker to re-cover lampshades and seat pads.
• The mirror was sourced from a second-hand shop and was a bit worse for wear. I gave it a coat of white paint and had the mirror replaced cheaply.
• The room is filled with light, so to ground it I decided to add a little bit of black in the form of a leopard-print carpet – it's fun and puts an unexpected twist into the scheme.
• I like to use white curtains, but the fabric needn't be expensive. You can jazz it up by adding trim along the edges.
• Consider how dark you need your bedroom to be at night, and think about whether you might need to include blackout curtains. So that these heavy curtains don't overwhelm the space, I like to use shutters on some windows instead.
