Taking the learnings one step further, Amanda demonstrates exactly how an inspirational image can translate into an entire room scheme.

From the Lesson Workbook

Creating an Inspiration Board - Part 2

One image can inspire a whole room scheme. In this lesson I'm going to show you how, by adding beautiful aesthetic details inspired by an image to a furniture plan.

Building a board from a single image:

  • A good place to start is the walls. Is there a particular colour in the image that you feel drawn to? Can you use a paint chart to find a colour match for your scheme?
  • What type of flooring is in your image? Are there a few different tones or materials you could try that would achieve a similar feel?
  • Next, you can turn your attention to the larger pieces of furniture in the room. Pull together a selection of different fabrics that relate to your image, and begin to think about where you might use them.
  • It's helpful to choose one fabric that you're certain about including and decide where you're going to include it. Based on this, you can look at the other elements in the room and edit your options down based on how these look in relation to the confirmed fabric. What mood are you trying to go for? How do you want light and dark to balance? You can also refer back to your original image for direction.

Discover more:

  • Paint colour: Ocean Breeze 2058-60, Benjamin Moore
  • Sofa: Paley sofa, Anthony Lawrence-Belfair
  • Chairs: Violet char, Bonacina
  • Fabrics: Clarence House, The House of Scalamandré, China Seas
  • Trim: Castille Tape Sky 70744, Schumacher

I also love to use jute rugs on the floor and matchstick blinds as a window treatment; these are widely available from various stockists.
