Learning from the Textile Design Process

As a textile designer, I often find that the process of designing fabric leads me very quickly into the process of designing a room. By taking you through how I design fabrics, I hope you'll see how the scale, colour and depth of the fabric you use directly impacts the mood and feeling of your rooms.

1. When looking for inspiration for my moodboards, childhood pictures are where I start. This is because the colours that the pictures contain mean something to me and creates a story behind the colour scheme.

1. Tartans are versatile and go with almost anything.

1. I always try to decorate in a way that is sensitive to where I am in the world. European houses often have a more traditional or muted colour scheme, whereas those in the USA can be fresher, with bolder colours.

1. I like to use different variations or shades of one colour. It's a great way of adding depth into my textiles.
