Curating Your Home

Curating is about the pieces we bring into our houses, and the way we put them together. It's an essential part of decorating, as objects play such an important role in creating an atmosphere in a house.

  1. I try to consistently edit my house. This doesn't mean that I throw things away - they can be repurposed, given away or sold.
  1. Old pots, jars and containers can often be turned into lamps! Search for your local lamp maker to learn more.
  1. Try not to buy disposable pieces. Invest in useful items that are going to last a lifetime.
  1. Using collections is a way I like to tell stories within my house. One item by itself can feel a little isolated, but put lots of similar items with it and they are imbued with meaning.
  1. To support the local area and incorporate the surroundings into a house I like to find local potters, artists and artisans. It's important to embrace the area where your house is, as it's these geographical characteristics that give a home soul.
  1. Using loose pieces of fabric around my home is an inexpensive way of adding layers. I like to put throws over my sofa and bed, or hang pieces of fabric on my walls as decoration.
  1. Your home will constantly evolve as your life evolves, so it's important not to feel as though it has to be 'finished' in some way.
  1. Don't worry about mixing different periods. As long as they're well made, doing so will often add a sense of depth to your interiors.
  1. I have some certain staples that I use in my decoration and curation, as listed below.
