The Business of Design

There aren't many hard and fast rules in the interior design industry. Contractual terms are often changed according to what the client wants and how much the designer wants to do the job. However, there are a few central points to consider, whether you're established or just starting out.

  1. Interior designers fees are split between a markup on items sourced in the project and a design fee.
  1. Markup is anything between 15% to 40%. When buying yardage of fabric, soft furnishings or bespoke pieces, the markup is generally higher. When buying antiques or rugs, the markup is generally lower.
  1. When getting into the design industry it is useful to become as multi-skilled as possible. Learn CAD, understand budgets and be aware that design is often 90% production and 10% creativity.
  1. The client relationship is fundamental, and in the initial stages I am always building trust and helping clients edit their ideas into something coherent.
  1. A Letter of Agreement is essential when working with clients. I always make sure it's signed by all parties so there are no misunderstandings.
  1. It's wise to stage the payment of the design fee. I charge a third up front at the design presentation, a third at the close of production and a third at the end of the installation.
