Kathryn begins her tour of La Castellane - her beautiful home in the south of France - in the guest bedroom, and runs you through how she’s used fabric and mixed period furniture to create a relaxed, calm space for her friends and family to enjoy.

From the Lesson Workbook

The Guest Bedroom

Guest bedrooms need to be made comfortable and welcoming. There are small things that can make a big difference - a water carafe, good lighting which is within reach of the bed, and some books that might be of interest. In terms of fabric and decorating, calm is the key word.

  1. In this lesson I refer to a French tester above the bed. This simply means a canopy of fabric, which adds real luxury to a room.
  1. Often, my guests won't want to be opening up cupboards and drawers to put their clothes away. Instead, I have some pegs on the wall where they can hang clothes easily and visibly.
  1. I like to have some quick fixes in the room to keep the room looking fresh by changing things up from winter to summer, such as a reversible bedspread or having some white linen on the bed to create a crisp summery feel.
  1. See how I have used the same fabric on the sofa cushions as on the bedspread and headboard, and then the same in the curtains and the drapery over the bed.
