Styling is often considered the ‘icing on the cake’, but it can be the moment that really brings a room together. Kathryn takes you through some of her favourite ways to style, and encourages you to incorporate it into your process.

From the Lesson Workbook

The Role of Styling

You don't need anything new to style your home. Instead, pull all of your current accessories off their current spots and then have a go at re-styling them. The glory of this process is that it isn't permanent so if you don't like how it turns out, you can simply revert back to how it was beforehand or try again.

  1. Finding relationships between pieces is central to good styling - they could share a colour, a shape or a texture.
  1. There are two different types of accessory - practical and decorative. I make sure I have a mix of both as it gives a layered feeling to a room.
  1. If I find a wonderful old piece of fabric that I want to make a cushion out of, I always try to make sure that I have enough to make a pair of cushions. If the amount of fabric I have is limited, I try to make the back of the cushion cover from a plain fabric instead, as it's only the front of the cushion that people pay attention to!
  1. I like to up-cycle any pieces that may have a patch of stain into something new like a cushion cover to keep things looking fresh.
  1. Try not to get caught up in what others are doing with their homes, my home is my representation of myself.
  1. Linens for a bed are an easy and achievable accessory to style a room.
  1. When styling a room, I try to think in odd numbers, as this helps to keep the eye interested.
