Mixing modern and reclaimed in bathroom schemes

There is a huge amount of opportunity to use salvage within a bathroom and so many lovely materials that can be used to create beautiful schemes bursting with interest and character.

Ceramic door push plate

Door push plates are often made from metal, typically brass or bronze, but these are a wonderfully unusual glazed ceramic design.

Why I love them

  • The reeded texture.
  • Distinctive circular pattern at either end.
  • Although old, probably Edwardian, they look incredibly modern and fresh.

Ways to use them

  • Bathrooms: the glazed ceramic material lends itself perfectly to being used in wet areas such as a bathroom.

Building a bathroom scheme

  • Alongside the ceramic door push plates, we have added in other salvaged and leftover materials.
  • Stonemasons will often be getting rid of leftover marble offcuts, which can be cut down into usable sizes.
  • Reclaimed tiles are a natural choice for bathrooms.
  • The key to making a salvaged scheme work is to stick to a calm and cohesive colour palette.
  • Mixing in a few modern elements will prevent the whole scheme from feeling too historic.
  • Sometimes there may not be enough of a certain material, so you will need to find creative ways to supplement if a lot of leftover metal remains.
