Introducing the Apartment

You're joining me in my apartment in Marylebone, London; a special place that has been our family home for many years. It has also played a pivotal part in our salvage journey.

Using the House for Exploration

The building was originally built in the 1970s by my father-in-law, who was an architect very much influenced by David Hicks and that era of open-plan living. When we moved in, it had very little insulation, so we eventually took the plunge to do a full-scale renovation.

This gave us the opportunity to use our home as a place of exploration and experimentation in reclaimed materials. We were able to see what was possible, as well as observe how materials reacted and aged over time within a busy family setting.

As I show you round the apartment, I'm going to be showing you the different materials we have used, how we used them and how they have stood the test of time.

Working with Salvage Over Time

A huge part of successfully salvaging materials is being able to elevate their rough and raw state into something that can be respected and treasured for many years to come.

Often this means being open-minded in your thinking as to how you can use a material.

Throughout the tour of my home, I'll be showing you how I've used the following materials:

  • tropical hardwood
  • teak
  • maple
  • tulip wood
  • marble
  • limestone
  • terrazzo
  • leather.
