Maria demonstrates how to use vintage textiles in a way that feels fresh and modern, fit for a contemporary interior scheme.
In this project, we had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy using different types of vintage textiles to create a modern and contemporary scheme.
Within the tonal palette of creams and whites, we used a variety of textiles, each with different textures. These include hemp and linen.
Often vintage textiles have been woven on narrower looms, which means they will need to be sewn together in order to cover an armchair or a sofa, but I love the additional texture and interest of seams and stitches.
We love to use Afghan kilim rugs, as they are often good value for money and suit a variety of interior schemes.
Just like vintage textiles, these kilim rugs are woven on narrow looms and stitched together, which means you can unpick the sections easily to adjust the size of the rug to fit your room. These smaller sections are also often the perfect size to be used as a stair runner.
A word of caution is to make sure you know exactly how much a rug is worth before taking it apart, as you could be dismantling something that is incredibly valuable. Never cut with scissors or a knife; instead, carefully unpick along visible seams.
For vintage pile rugs, always look on the reverse side, as this can sometimes be more visually appealing and contemporary-looking.
