Every now and again, you come across large pieces of salvage that are one of a kind. With these items, it's especially important to think beyond their original use and get creative when incorporating them into a scheme.

Curved Terrazzo Cladding

Salvaged from a department store in Liverpool, these curved terrazzo pieces were used to clad large steel columns and add fire protection.

Why we love them

  • They are beautifully tactile and interesting to look at.
  • I find their form to be calming within an interior.
  • Their pale colour reflects light in a really pleasing way.

How we use them

  • To build a wall: rather than use them as a column, we decided to open them up and use them to create an undulating wall.

More is Less

I often find a restrained approach to salvage will give you the best results. You want to avoid it feeling chaotic, messy and distracting.

I go by the saying 'more is less', and what I mean by that is it's always better to have more of something to create a larger backdrop of one material than lots of different materials used in a small space. A large backdrop of the same material feels calm and intentional.

Using textural and tactile materials as a wall cladding is a great way to avoid swathes of plain white walls and provides interest without the need for paintings.
