Understanding Different Types of Timber

A big part of using reclaimed timber in an environmentally responsible way is to be mindful of the properties of different woods and how this impacts where they are best used.

Using Different Timbers Responsibly

There are certain timbers that are in short supply, and there are many wood species that are considered endangered.

While salvaging is a very environmentally friendly practice at its core, we do need to be careful of making certain materials too fashionable or desirable. This can increase demand and thus lead people to seek out new material, defeating the purpose of reclaiming what we already have.

Teak and other tropical hardwoods come from threatened rainforests and should ideally only be used when salvaged or reclaimed.

Try to use timbers that are local to you. In the UK, these could be:

  • oak
  • beech
  • ash

Using Reclaimed Hardwood

When using salvaged hardwood, consider the best and most appropriate use based on the natural properties of the timber to give the material maximum respect.

For example, the water-resistant properties of teak mean it works really well in humid environments, such as bathrooms. Its longevity also means it is great to use as external cladding.

Think about the direction you use the hardwood. If you have a low ceiling, laying the wood vertically automatically draws the eye upward and brings height into the room.

Sealing Your Timbers

Be mindful that adding a sealant to timber will impact the look. Unsealed teak is more natural and duller in appearance and will develop a silvery-grey patina over time. When a sealant is applied, the look is richer and more consistent in tone, preserving the original colour for longer. Both ways have their unique beauty.
