When using salvaged materials, you often need to be open-minded and consider a different approach to usage and installation.

Thinking Flexibly

Traditionally, doors sit within a door frame and swing open and closed on a hinge. However, often the best way to use reclaimed doors is to install them top hung so that they slide and surface mount them to the wall.

This means the size of the opening doesn't matter, and you don't need to be so prescriptive about finding a reclaimed door with specific measurements.

Internal Windows

This can be done by insetting a window into a door or a wall. A door is usually easier, as walls may require structural changes to accommodate a window.

In a timber-structured building, adding a window into the wall is much easier, as there is likely to be an existing opening you can take advantage of.
