Project 4 - Lined Curtain with Pencil Pleat Heading - Part 2

Next, it's time to prepare, cut and sew together your lining. You can also sew together your pattern match and find out if your hard work has paid off!

Step Five

Measure and cut your lining.

  • Using exactly the same measurements and method as your face fabric, cut your lining.

Step Six

Join the two widths of your lining together using a self-pressing seam.

  • The reverse of your lining will be a bit shiny, whereas the face will have a nicer feel.
  • Lay your two pieces of lining out flat and straight on the table face together with the edges lined up.
  • Roll back the edge of the top fabric by roughly 0.5cm - if you are confident, you can do this by eye freehand as I'm doing. However for your first few projects I recommend measuring and pinning. Do this down the entire length of your fabric.
  • Take this to your machine, and straight stitch as close to the fold as possible.

Step Seven

Join together the widths of your main fabric that you've pattern matched.

  • Pinning all the way down will have created a visible line. You want to follow this line as accurately as you can with a straight stitch on the machine.
  • If you have pinned correctly, you will be able to run the machine straight over the pins with little chance of your needle breaking.

Step Eight

Once you've sewn your pattern match, take it to the table to be pressed out.

  • Take all the pins out, and lay your fabric out flat along the pattern match to see whether it has worked.
  • If there are parts that haven't quite matched up, don't worry! Once your curtain is gathered and installed, you are unlikely to notice the imperfections.
  • Turn your fabric face down, and press open the excess. At this point, you can use the iron to either slightly loosen or tighten any parts of the pattern match that don't quite line up.
