Project 3 - Hanging the Valance

Once you've made your valance, you have the enjoyment of putting it up in your home.

Benefits of a Valance

  • A valance can be a really clever way to elongate a short window. By installing it a little higher than the window frame, you can give the illusion of a taller window.
  • If your windows are wonky, a valance can help to visually straighten out some of these lines.
  • A simple curtain heading such as a rod pocket can be disguised behind a valance for a more luxurious feel.
  • As well as a window, valances can be used along the top of a four-poster bed or the top of a door frame for a playful bit of detail.

How to Fit a Valance

  • Your valance will sit on its own separate track.
  • Try to source a specialist valance track, as this will project out a little and allow room to accommodate the bulk of other window dressings.
  • As a general rule, the track should sit halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling - but this can be adjusted if you're trying to elongate your window even more.
