Arthur describes it as 'more grown-up gardening' but in many ways more basic and easier, covering the fundamentals of soil, drainage, pot preparation and plant selection step by step. Absolutely — every garden featured in the course is planted on hard surfaces, from Arthur's own slab-heavy garden in Gloucestershire to his mum's urban 'flower yard' in Nottinghamshire and his aunt's narrow shady terrace. There's a dedicated lesson on low-maintenance shade planting with ferns, smoke bush, fatsia japonica, climbing hydrangea and pittosporum, all grown in pots. Whether you have a balcony, a courtyard, a doorstep or a larger garden, the techniques scale to your space.

Arthur's first course focused on annuals, bulbs and seasonal bedding, while this second course looks at 'investment' plants — roses, shrubs, woody perennials and perennial bulbs that come back year after year and can even outlive you. The emphasis is on sustainability, lower cost over time and plants that thrive on semi-neglect, so you spend less time working and more time enjoying your garden. It's about creating a permanent skeleton and layers of planting rather than staging a last-minute flower show each summer.

Yes — attracting wildlife is at the heart of the course. Arthur shows how ornamental cultivars such as long-flowering buddleja, foxgloves, single-centred roses and early spring bulbs feed honeybees, wild bumblebees, butterflies and moths, and explains how birdbaths, hedgehog access holes and fruiting trees invite in the songbirds and hedgehogs that control aphids, slugs and snails. You'll discover that a wildlife garden doesn't have to look like a meadow — it can be glamorous, abundant and full of scent.
