Head Gardener at the world-famous Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Troy Scott Smith is one of the UK’s leading horticulturists. In this first lesson, we discover his journey and inspiration, his naturalistic gardening style and approach at Sissinghurst, and what we will learn in the course.
Sissinghurst’s history and the influence that it has on the way the garden is managed today a theme that runs throughout the course. Troy takes us through the story behind the garden, its creators, and some of the most iconic areas.
On a glorious autumn morning in the orchard, we learn how to add spring bulbs to grass in a naturalistic and effective way that is sensitive to the surroundings and provides a succession of colour.
Troy explores the practical aspects of how to plant bulbs efficiently, how other spring plants can be added to grass for further interest, and how yellow rattle can be used to help convert grass into meadow.
In the surroundings of the famous White Garden at Sissinghurst, Troy demonstrates some key tasks to do in early March to get the season off to the best start.
Troy demonstrates how to plant Narcissi to add spring interest to a shadier area of the White Garden, and a trick for starting off bulbs if you’re not yet sure where to put them.
Offering several advantages over pot-grown roses, bare root roses are easy to plant with Troy’s simple tricks to give them the best start.
Troy shares how to train your rose once it’s well established, to get the most out of the blooms and create the right atmosphere you want to make for your garden.
From Troy’s favourite part of the garden, you’ll learn how to choose and plant a pear tree, and the aftercare needed to give it the best start.
Spring bulbs bring some of the first colour and joy of the year. Troy shows you how to use them in long grass, orchard or meadow areas to achieve a beautiful naturalistic effect.
You’ll learn in detail how to harness this essential skill to keep apple and pear trees healthy, productive and in good shape.
Troy shares how to assess your borders in detail, over the year, to take your gardening to the next level. Using the Purple Border as an example, discover how to successfully redesign an existing border.
Troy demonstrates how to map out an existing border that already contains plants to use as the basis for planning a redesign.
In early June, Troy introduces you to his daily process of making edits to keep the Rose Garden looking its best at this fast-paced time of year.
Troy shares his approach to another task for late May or early June, the Chelsea chop, and how he uses it to maximise the length of the flowering period.
You’ll learn what to do in early June to keep these seasonal stars looking their best.
Troy takes us behind the scenes to the ‘engine room’ of the garden to demonstrate an effective and versatile new way of making compost, and how it can be done at home, on any scale.
