Nurturing existing beds will help you to produce healthy plants. In this lesson, the Land Gardeners will teach you the best way to prep a bed for planting.

From the Lesson Workbook

Preparing an Existing Bed for Planting

We've shown you how to prepare a new bed for planting, but we thought it might be useful to explain how to prepare an existing bed too.

When you're prepping an existing bed, make sure to leave a 20 - 30 cm gap between the different planted areas to use as a walkway. This way, you won't have to walk on the bed, which will prevent it from becoming compacted.

To prepare your bed:

  • cover the area with a thin layer of compost
  • using a broad fork, aerate the soil every 10 - 15 cm
  • rake the compost into the bed so that it trickles down into the holes left by the broadfork
  • when you're working with the broadfork, work backwards to ensure you don't walk over the soil again

Planting Nicotiana Seedlings

Whatever you choose to plant in your bed, add a pinch of climate compost to the hole first. This will give your seedlings all the minerals and nutrients they need to thrive as they grow.

Once planted, water your seedlings with compost tea, and remember, healthy soil equals healthy plants.

The Land Gardeners

Award-winning garden designers and cut flower growers on a mission to save our soil.

Garden designers, flower growers and compost creators, Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy joined forces to found The Land Gardeners in 2012. United by their passion for organically grown plants and a shared interest in soil health, they began by growing and selling cut flowers to esteemed florists, and worked on restoring historic gardens to their former glory. Most recently, they launched Climate Compost - a project born from years of inquisitive research into soil biology with the aim of creating a microbially rich compost that produces nutrient dense crops, while also supporting and boosting the local ecosystem. With an unwavering commitment to improving the health of our land and its biodiversity, The Land Gardeners’ approach is one of sensitivity, unparalleled expertise and, above all, a loving respect for the natural world and its preservation.
