The Art of Editing

Our possessions tell the story of who we are. Learn with Gabby how you can reveal your identity through your possessions.

How I Learnt to Edit

The main goal of House & Garden was to choose products to tell a specific story. The items we included were those that worked well together, told a great story and created a great family. It's about you choosing the things in your home that represent who you are, what you like, where you've been, and what interests you.

It's not about valuing, but about choosing the things that matter most to you and leaving out those that don't.

How to Begin Editing a Space

  1. Take an audit of your possessions. Take a look at your lamps, books, items on your bookshelf, and the things you don't like and are considering getting rid of.
  1. Some things may need work. For example, a lamp you love might need a new shade, or an old picture might just need reframing.
  1. It's also about what you can bring in. If you want to introduce a colour, you should consider the way you introduce it. Editing involves more than just creating a pile of items you like. Rather, make the most of them by thinking about how to use them in the context of your ideas.

Storytelling with Your Possessions

Stories change all the time. They evolve and we evolve. There may even be a seasonal aspect to the story you tell – a different story to tell at different times of the year. The goal is to create rooms that tell a story about who we are at that time.

The Art of Editing Your Space Checklist

  • Take an audit of your possessions.
  • Look at the things that may need some work.
  • Think about things you want to bring in.

Gabby started her career at House & Garden shortly after, honing her personal taste and quickly becoming known as a driving force within the magazine for bringing high-end interior design to a wider audience, championing practical, achievable and beautiful styling.
