A Few Rules of Thumb

Discover Gabby's simple rules for arranging: essential tips you need to know to ensure a successful styling arrangement.

Many of us aren't natural stylists and need a lot of time to figure out what is good and works well together.

Rules of Thumb to Follow When Arranging

Scale is Important

Understanding and harnessing scale is important, as creating shapes is the essence of arranging. A well-thought-out arrangement is always enjoyable. Books can be used to prop up items to give height variation

Things Need to Be Balanced

Strike a balance with the type of object you select. A conscious choice must be made. The key to balancing objects is to let them shine as separate pieces. You should also think about combining materials to achieve balance.

The Power of Repetition

A collection creates a more powerful effect than a single object. A repetition or collection of objects is an excellent thing to fall back on.

High-Low

Mixing something valuable, beautiful, rare or unusual with something quite ordinary can create a beautiful arrangement.

Stick to Your Guns

It's important to stay true to yourself and not lose faith. Don't keep second-guessing yourself. If you like what it brings to your space, just stick with it.

A Room Operates in 360°

Remember that a room works from many different perspectives. Try to create visual interest and beauty from every angle.

Buy Things Over Time

Don't try to do everything at once. Take your time. Buy one thing at a time and choose carefully. Then bring it home and live with it for a while. For an interior to appear convincingly evolved, there must be some real evolution behind it.

The Power of Odd

As a rule, odd numbers are more attractive than even numbers. Nine pictures hanging on a wall always look better than four.

One of the UK’s leading figures on all things interiors, Gabby Deeming has spent the past 15 years pulling together beautiful schemes as Creative Director of Decoration at House & Garden. Gabby started her career at House & Garden shortly after, honing her personal taste and quickly becoming known as a driving force within the magazine for bringing high-end interior design to a wider audience, championing practical, achievable and beautiful styling. In 2017, after taking a short sabbatical in India, Gabby followed her passion for patterned textiles to launch Daydress - an ethically-minded fashion line celebrating block printed fabrics.
