Bedrooms

Bedrooms can be decorated in a huge variety of ways, depending on who uses them. They are a great place to let your creativity run wild.

My tips for decorating bedrooms

  • In a master bedroom, often there are two people sharing, so you'll need to balance both of their tastes and characters.
  • Guest bedrooms can be a wonderful space to experiment with bolder decorating decisions.
  • Soft sheets and a comfortable mattress are essential for any bedroom.
  • I think goose down pillows are the best. I will tend to dress the bed with two of these for sleeping, alongside a firmer feather and down pillow for support when sitting up.
  • Personally I don't use bedspreads very often; instead, I prefer to use blankets or even a tablecloth in place of a blanket.
  • If it's possible, a walk-in closet is a preferable option, as it means the bedroom can be kept as a clutter-free sanctuary.
  • I like to avoid built-in closets looking too much like kitchen cabinets by giving them a different treatment. You could have them painted in a unique design, or include panels of pleated fabric on the door fronts.
  • Pay attention to the bedside tables. They need to offer plenty of space for books, lighting and a glass of water. They should also be at a comfortable height in relation to the mattress.
  • Headboards are available in a huge array of shapes and sizes, and are a great way to make a statement in a bedroom.
  • In my book, the headboard fabric and valance fabric should always match.
  • Something I love to do in a bedroom is to put fabric on the wall for a lovely soft and tactile effect.
  • Four-poster beds are a wonderfully luxurious choice, and come in a rich variety of styles - from traditional wooden designs to a more contemporary mirrored version.
  • In regards to other furniture, if you have the room, it's nice to place some sort of seating at the end of a bed. A table that can double as a desk or a dressing table is also good to have, and I would consider an armchair with a side table and lamp a must.
  • In a small bedroom, you could use a chest of drawers instead of a bedside table to increase the storage space.

British decorator Nina Campbell is undeniably one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers of our time. In her 50 years in the industry, she has accumulated an unparalleled list of clients and design expertise. Nina’s enthusiasm and interest in design and interiors was developed when, at the age of 19, she went to work for John Fowler at the prestigious Sybil Colefax & John Fowler. Shortly afterwards, she set up her eponymous decorating business, where one of her first commissions was to design a castle in Scotland. Renowned for her contagious wit, brilliant sense of style and her unmistakably rich and elegant colour palette, Nina’s designs appeal to both young and old and sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. She continues to work on notable projects - both commercial and residential - across the globe, with both new clients and those who return across the generations.
