An incredibly important part of any room scheme, colour has a huge impact on the overall feel of a room. It’s also extremely personal and can be instrumental in conveying character and personality within an interior.
An incredibly important part of any room scheme, colour has a huge impact on the overall feel of a room. It's also extremely personal, and can be instrumental in conveying character and personality within an interior.
To begin with, think about the colours that you're drawn to, and the combinations you like. In doing so, you can also eliminate colours and combinations you don't like.
The light a room receives can either be complemented or contrasted with the colours you choose. I believe it's a myth that dark rooms need to be painted in light colours; in fact I prefer to lean into the moody nature of these spaces and go for deep and dramatic colours for a cocooning effect.
Neutrals can be a minefield, as all neutral paint shades will have varying undertones of different colours within them. It's best to stick to two or three that have the same undertone but vary in depths, and use them throughout a project.
The lighter neutral should be applied to the ceiling, the mid-tone to the walls, and the deeper, darker shade to the woodwork.
I like to apply lacquer on top of the paint on my ceiling, as it provides a wonderfully reflective surface that helps to give the effect of the ceiling being higher than it is.
Different colours can inspire different feelings and moods. I find red to be a particularly welcoming and warming colour.

British decorator Nina Campbell is undeniably one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers of our time. In her 50 years in the industry, she has accumulated an unparalleled list of clients and design expertise. Nina’s enthusiasm and interest in design and interiors was developed when, at the age of 19, she went to work for John Fowler at the prestigious Sybil Colefax & John Fowler. Shortly afterwards, she set up her eponymous decorating business, where one of her first commissions was to design a castle in Scotland. Renowned for her contagious wit, brilliant sense of style and her unmistakably rich and elegant colour palette, Nina’s designs appeal to both young and old and sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. She continues to work on notable projects - both commercial and residential - across the globe, with both new clients and those who return across the generations.
