Philosophy & Approach

Designing your own garden needn't be daunting. This lesson reveals the key principles to create a space that will enrich your life and enjoy a wonderfully rewarding process along the way.

Things to keep in mind when you're designing a garden:

  1. Who is it for?
  2. Where is it?
  3. What does it need to do for the people using it?
  4. The aim is to create an atmosphere with plants and materials
  5. Keep it simple – simplicity means easy to use and easy on the eye.

Creating Spaces for People

Gardens are always changing: you create a space and then nature tweaks it, which adds magic.

  • The key is that you're creating a space for people to enjoy.

Timeless Gardens are a Gift to Future Generations

When you create a garden, it's a place that can last for decades.

  • If you plant a tree, you're planting it for future generations.
  • Think long-term as you're not just making your own life better; you're also creating a space for the future.

Don't Be Daunted

Creating a garden can seem daunting at first, but if you break it down into sections, it is achievable.

  • The key is to keep things simple and follow a few basic rules and steps.

A Garden is a Pastime, Not Just a Design

Once you've finished and created your design, you have to maintain it.

  • When you're involved in creating the garden, you get to know the plants and looking after them becomes less frightening.

A Word of Encouragement

25-30 years ago I didn't have a garden of my own and was daunted. But I'm so glad I took that step – I've learnt so much, met wonderful people, visited wonderful gardens, read some great books and courses, and all of those have fed into the creation of my garden. I'm confident that you can do the same.
