No — this course is designed for complete beginners as well as more experienced sewers. Chloe demonstrates every stitch slowly and repeats the same simple up-and-down stitch throughout, with plenty of reassurance and troubleshooting tips for when things don't go perfectly. She recommends starting with the gathered lampshade before progressing to the slightly fiddlier frilly-bottom version, so your confidence builds naturally.

You'll need a lampshade frame (Chloe uses a 14-inch frame), outer and lining fabric, cotton bias binding, extra-strong waxed polyester thread, long darner needles, dressmaker's pins, tape measure and ruler, small sharp scissors, an iron, a marking pencil and a glue stick for finishing. Everything is listed in the downloadable course notes along with the formulas for calculating fabric for any frame size. No sewing machine is required — Chloe demonstrates a hand-gathering technique so you can complete the whole project by hand.

Yes — Chloe specialises in vintage textiles and uses vintage silk and sari fabrics for both projects, showing you how to work around delicate areas and even hide small tears within the pleats. The skills taught are fully transferable, so you can follow along with any shape or size of frame; the course notes explain exactly how to calculate the fabric needed for different dimensions. This makes it an affordable, sustainable way to create something truly one-of-a-kind for your home.

Chloe runs a professional soft-furnishing and upholstery business and teaches traditional, slow-textile hand-sewing methods rather than quick manufactured techniques. She shares the professional tricks she's developed in her own workshops — including how to pleat lining over the metal spokes, get invisible stitching, and use a glue stick to seal frayed edges for a flawless finish. The course closes with the finished lampshades styled in her own home, so you can see exactly how a bespoke shade transforms a room.
