The Living Room Set

We have replicated the typical elements within a living room so you can see how light techniques can be applied to the different features.

Top Tips

  • Miniature spotlights can be positioned directly onto the coffee table to illuminate a vase of flowers, and are incredibly useful for adding lighting interest to the middle of a room.
  • Directional downlights provide a soft wash to the bookcase and have a colour temperature of 2700k.
  • Another way to light a bookcase is to position lights within the unit itself using LED strips. Positioning these LED strips towards the front of the shelves offers a softer effect, while placing them at the back of the shelves gives much more drama.
  • Think about what you want to display in your bookcase, as this will inform the positioning of the lighting. If it is mainly filled with books, a front light would work best. If you'll be styling it with lots of objects, I would recommend a mix of focus lighting and backlighting.
  • LED strips can sometimes be fitted retrospectively within a bookcase, however, it's always crucial to conceal the light source so you may need to add a pelmet to hide the driver and wiring.
  • Small uplights can work really well to enhance a fireplace, defining its shape and adding an accent within the room.
  • There are a few options when it comes to lighting artwork. In a contemporary setting, you may choose to have a directional focus light in the ceiling. Alternatively, you could use a framing projector or a picture light.
