Designing Your Cut Flower Bed: Planning the Patch for Season Three

Season Three: Mid-July to Mid-September

In season three the patch transitions to half-hardy annuals. Half-hardy annuals have an average flowering season of 20 weeks, compared to hardy annuals which have an average flowering season of 10 weeks.

In season three, we will already be picking from the plants that went in during season two, such as the cosmos and the snapdragons, but I will be adding more plants in among these throughout the season. These will include a mix of bulky and more delicate plants, which will help you to get texture into your arrangements.

Our Season Three Plants Are:

  • Cosmos
  • Snapdragons
  • Ammi majus - though this begins to get ropey by the end of July
  • Dahlias
  • Phlox 'Creme Brulee'
  • Grass 'Frosted Explosion' - this is a great plant for sparrows, blue tits and goldfinches
  • Iceland poppies
  • Tagetes
  • Zinnias
