During the summer months, you might need to provide your taller plants with a bit more support. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to stake Ammi visnaga to a strong post.

From the Lesson Workbook

Staking Ammi visnaga with a clove hitch

One of our main methods of staking during the summer months is to use a single stake with a clove hitch knot.

This works especially well for heavy, tall plants that may be too strong for the jute netting. We don't use bamboo canes here because they aren't strong enough and harvesting our own wood is much more sustainable.

This is a great method for individual sunflowers or anything else which is top heavy.

  • Knock your wooden stake into the ground with your mallet
  • Create a clove hitch knot and secure your plant to the stake with the twine
  • Tie your plant loosely so that your plant still has movement but won't blow over
  • As your plant grows, add another clove hitch knot and another if required

You will need:

  • Wooden post
  • Rubber mallet
  • Twine
  • Scissors
