Chloe offers advice for selecting the perfect trim for your lampshade project, and discusses the different options depending on the look you want to achieve.

Choosing Your Trim

There are seemingly endless options when it comes to trim for your lampshade. My tip is to not get overwhelmed, and instead to see it as an opportunity to really communicate your own sense of style.

Types of Trim

  • Stretchy velvet trim

This wraps round the lampshade frame really well, and the slight stretch makes it easy to achieve a professional finish.

  • Satin bias binding

Cut on the bias to give it a slight stretch, and available in a huge range of colours and thicknesses.

  • Self bound

Making your own trim using your choice of fabric; something I will show you how to make later on in the course.

  • Bobble trim

Creates a fun look, and can be either slip stitched or glued on.

The Width of Trim

Ideally you should look for a trim that is around 15 mm in width; I find this offers a pleasing proportion to most lampshades.

As with every element of lampshade making, you can experiment with the width of trim, and go with what you feel looks best for your project.
