How to Store and Care for Your Dried Flowers

Once your flowers have dried, you'll need to store them.

To do this successfully, it's important to stick to the golden rules and store them at ambient temperature in moisture-free conditions, out of direct sunlight. Personally, I like to be able to see my dried flowers, as their textures, colours and tones inspire my work.

My Hanging Method

The hanging method that can be seen in my studio involves a structure I built myself. It's similar to an upside-down A frame with wire going across it. I hang the flowers in bunches down the frame, making sure they aren't on top of one another, which could cause damage to the stems.

Things to Consider When Storing Your Flowers

  • Make sure all your flowers have space to breathe.
  • Don't hang flowers on top of each other, otherwise they may be crushed.
  • If hanging from the ceiling or a frame, make sure your flowers aren't in direct sunlight.

Storing Your Flowers in Crates

  • Layer your bunches in the crates alternately, so the flowerheads aren't squashing one another.
  • Put tissue paper at the base of your crates to create an even, clean surface.

Storing in Sealed Boxes

  • While it is possible to store your flowers in plastic storage containers, you will need to be very careful to ensure that no moisture is trapped inside, as mould will take over in airtight spaces.
  • Make sure to label your boxes so you know what you have and where everything is.

Caring for Your Creations

You can get a few years out of most flower displays, but you can increase their longevity even more by giving them a bit of TLC too.

  • Dust your dried flower displays using a hairdryer set at the lowest setting.
  • If some flowers are looking tired, simply remove these blooms and replace them with newer ones to freshen up your arrangement.
