Creating and Displaying

Framed dried flowers on fabric

Flower frames are a wonderful way to display dried flowers in a contemporary manner. By removing the glass from the frames, you can create striking pieces that work well individually or as part of a triptych.

Using just one variety for each frame can work well here, but let your imagination run wild and experiment with colour, texture and size. Contemporary hanging techniques, such as draping a large piece of fabric over a branch, can create a beautiful design feature here too.

Materials You'll Need:

  • picture frame
  • natural tape
  • fabric
  • cardboard
  • dried flower stems

For This Project, I Chose:

  • Crinkled cress (Lepidium sativum)
  • Annual everlasting (Xeranthemum annuum)
  • Wild umbellifer

How to put your frame together

  • Remove the glass from your frame and set it aside for another project.
  • Remove the backing from your frame and cut out a piece of cardboard the same size as this backing.
  • Wrap your chosen fabric around the cardboard and secure it with natural tape
  • put this into the frame, place the back behind it and secure it.

Sewing your stems in place

  • For this project, I opted for just one striking stem, but you can use as many stems or types of flower as you wish.
  • Secure your stem to the frame with double knot stitches at the bottom, middle and top, ensuring that your needle only goes through a few weaves so that no bunching or pulling occurs on the plant or the fabric.

Ideas for hanging

  • Creating a triptych of complementary frames would make a beautiful feature for any room.
  • If you want to make a larger piece, consider other hanging techniques, such as draping a curtain of fabric over a branch.
