Going even closer still, Jason talks through how to use a macro lens in plant portraiture to really capture detail.

Macro Shots

Now I want to get a super-detailed portrait, focusing on just one stem.

Making sure the background is working is even more important for these kinds of shots. Ideally you want quite a clean background, with nothing too distracting.

Even if the light is nice and soft, it can still be helpful to have your plamp set up with a white card to give some extra shadow detail.

Use the rule of thirds to position the singular plant in the frame; imagine that the shot is broken down into three sections, and play around with positioning the plant within one of the sections. It could be central, or you can play with negative space by positioning it far to one side.

When you're focusing on just one subject, it's even more crucial that your image is sharp, so be sure to keep checking using the display on the back of your camera. You can even use a Hoodman loupe to magnify the display to make this easier.

Keep Checking the Light

As the light moves, it can dramatically change how the subject looks and photographs. It's worth waiting it out to see whether this might be for the better.
