Finding Inspiration

To be successful in garden photography, it's crucial to immerse yourself in nature at every opportunity. Go outside, explore and discover everything there is to see in the natural world, and allow yourself to be inspired.

Inspiration

  • Regularly getting into the great outdoors is a big part of garden photography. As well as practising in your own garden, I would recommend researching the local public gardens in your area. You may also find private gardens that are open on certain days or periods of the year.
  • Organising trips or holidays that are focused around photography is a great way to test your ability to create images in different conditions, and pushes your creativity at the same time.
  • If you plan on becoming a published photographer, setting your own brief and creating a set of images to present to a magazine can be a great way to give your photography focus. It can also help you to define your style and aesthetic.
  • Use garden magazines and nature books to seek out composition ideas. Think about which shots you are drawn to, and why you feel these work better for you than other images.
  • Look to other types of photography too, as you can still glean inspiration even if the subject is different.

Jason Ingram is an award-winning garden photographer based in Bristol. He travels widely photographing gardens, plants and people for the UK’s leading magazines and provides photography for numerous best selling gardening books by top international garden designers. In 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2014 and 2013 he was awarded ‘Garden Photographer of the Year’ by The Garden Media Guild and ‘Features Photographer of the Year’ in 2019 and 2016. For his personal work, Jason has been photographing the landscape and coastline of Britain for over 25 years, and in 2008 was awarded ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’ for "Living the View" category. Jason lectures on his work and teaches in-person garden photography courses. His work is held in numerous private collections and he receives regular commissions from HM King Charles III to photograph his private estate at Highgrove, as well as Piet Oudolf’s garden at Hauser & Wirth gallery in Somerset.
