From the Lesson Workbook

Finding Inspiration

To be successful in garden photography, it's crucial to immerse yourself in nature at every opportunity. Go outside, explore and discover everything there is to see in the natural world, and allow yourself to be inspired.

Inspiration

  • Regularly getting into the great outdoors is a big part of garden photography. As well as practising in your own garden, I would recommend researching the local public gardens in your area. You may also find private gardens that are open on certain days or periods of the year.
  • Organising trips or holidays that are focused around photography is a great way to test your ability to create images in different conditions, and pushes your creativity at the same time.
  • If you plan on becoming a published photographer, setting your own brief and creating a set of images to present to a magazine can be a great way to give your photography focus. It can also help you to define your style and aesthetic.
  • Use garden magazines and nature books to seek out composition ideas. Think about which shots you are drawn to, and why you feel these work better for you than other images.
  • Look to other types of photography too, as you can still glean inspiration even if the subject is different.
