Post-Production

Backing up

When you finish any shoot, backing up is an extremely important part of the process.

When using a digital camera, all of your images will be stored on a memory card. You will need to insert this memory card into a card reader in order to upload the images onto a computer.

Once the images are on my computer, I always back them up so that I have two copies of the images in two different places. This means that if, for whatever reason, I lose one set, I have the other set as a reserve. You can do this onto an external hard drive, or onto an online storage platform.

Getting your post-production environment right

To obtain the best pictures, you need to create the perfect post-production setting. This means being able to see the true colours within the image, with no interruption from other light sources. Ideally you need a high-resolution monitor that's positioned in a dark room with controllable lighting.

Importing images into Lightroom

Open up Adobe Lightroom, and click on the 'Library' tab. Click the 'Import' button, which is at the bottom left corner of the screen.

You can then navigate to where you have stored the images on your computer and select the desired folder.

Make sure that 'Build Previews' is at '1:1', tick 'Build Smart Previews', and tick 'Don't Import Selected Duplicates'.

Finally, click 'Import' at the bottom right of the screen.
