From the Lesson Workbook

A Swedish-inspired Painted Sideboard - Part 2

Composition and Design

This stage is all about developing your design, and creating a mock-up enables you to start considering how each motif and pattern will sit together in the wider composition.

Tips for Design Development

  • Sketch out and paint the individual elements you want to include within your piece and finesse them until they are perfect. Try out different configurations and colour combinations.
  • Your mock-up needn't be particularly detailed - it's more about testing how different shapes, forms and colours sit together compositionally.
  • Sometimes translating your ideas onto the furniture shape brings up new questions and challenges you may not have thought about, and creating a mock-up helps you to answer and solve these before working on the actual piece.

You Will Need:

  • Sheets of paper or card
  • Your inspirational references
  • Eggshell paint in a colours of your choice

As Eggshell paint is unavailable in a tester pot size, you could buy the Emulsion tester pots and work with these first to see if you like the colours before committing to the full-size Eggshell pots for your final piece.

  • Pencil
  • A selection of small paintbrushes
  • Paint palette
  • 3 x water jars filled with water
