We go behind the scenes at Chiltern Seeds to discover where some of our seeds come from and the journey they go through to make it into seed catalogues, as well as current trends and favourites.
Everyone has a trusted seed supplier and Chiltern Seeds is my default – they have a huge range of both flower and vegetable seed, and stock unusual varieties as well as popular varieties. They also have really good photography of the plants and present these in inspiring ways.
Chiltern is a family-run business taken over by Heather Leedham and Sally Redhead ten years ago from their father, who was known for unusual varieties.
Heather and Sally have tried to stay true to that mission. While they're still buying popular species, they're looking for less obvious varieties of that species.
Peach and apricot have been the most popular colours at Chiltern for the last few years and that doesn't seem to be changing. For example:
"With the bespoke photography on the website and leaflets we're trying to show our customers what else they can do – this is how amazing flowers can be, and have you thought of this colour?"
– Heather Leedham, Chiltern Seeds
