Manually selecting the right exposure is a notoriously challenging part of photography. Jason talks you through the three elements that make up the exposure ‘triangle’ - shutter speed, ISO and aperture - breaking down step by step how they interact with each other, allowing you to really get to grips with the fundamentals.

Building on your new understanding of how exposure works, this lesson encourages you to begin manually experimenting with different settings, as well as unpacking how to create ‘high-key’ and ‘low-key’ images, photographs that expose in a particular way to get a specific effect.

Jason demystifies how to choose a camera and advises on different lenses and their uses. going through prime lenses, zoom lenses, telephoto lenses and macro lenses. In the workbook, a full glossary of terms is included to really unpack how kit works.

Jason explains how neutral density filters (or ND filters) help to balance the exposure of your garden and nature photography, breaking down what they are, why they’re important and when to use them.

A good wide shot of landscape or garden is one of the most impressive images you can make with your camera. First, Jason talks through how to set up on a tripod for a shot that takes in the entire view, capturing a blanket of snowdrops using a 24-70mm lens.

A key teaching point in Jason’s approach to photography, he explains how to pre-visualise, or think ahead and plan for the image you want to achieve. You’ll learn how to read the light and predict where you’ll need to set up in your scene to get that perfect shot.

To achieve the best results, the positioning of a composition should be dictated by the light. In this lesson, Jason shows a key factor in achieving a beautifully lit image; backlight.

Photographing handheld offers a huge amount of creative freedom, but there are some tricks and techniques to creating a successful result.

Watch how Jason tackles a slightly tricky composition, as he emphasises the importance of being adaptable.

It’s now time to create the image that was pre-visualised earlier on in the day. Jason takes you through his process, revealing how he uses different exposures across lots of images to give him the material he needs to create the best possible image in post-production.
