How can I find the best vintage and antique furniture? How can I tell if I have found a true vintage bargain? In this lesson, Kate shows you how to shop for vintage furniture and pair it with contemporary pieces.
The importance of frequenting vintage and antique shops cannot be overstated. A vintage shop has so many wonderful treasures.
When you buy furniture, you should think about how it will be used and where it will be placed. You should never be afraid to ask questions to shopkeepers since they can always share great tips and tricks. Think laterally about all the things you could get. Adding a vintage storage locker to your space is a great way to add extra storage.
Cork is a wonderful sustainable material and it's very acoustically efficient, deadening any sound. Antique shops, charity shops, car boot sales and antique markets are all great. Conversing with the owner is always great, they know so much about their products and this can be invaluable.
If you are buying vintage online, make sure to zoom in and check for any markings. The key to shopping vintage is to invest time and care into finding the right piece you'll keep for a lifetime. If you really want to make your house appear unique, take the time to find the right pieces. Don't get bogged down with labels and brands; buy things you love.
Mid-century modern was a design movement that spanned from about 1933 to 1965 and included architecture, industrial design, interior design, and graphic design. The end of World War II coincided with new uses of wood, which manufacturers and designers seized upon by making furniture that was no longer purely functional but functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing. Several designers created iconic furniture and lighting that are still highly coveted today. Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson, and more.
Early-20th-century modernism, including the Bauhaus and International movements, gave rise to this style. With the advent of newly developed technologies and materials combined with economic prosperity, the midcentury period really took off following World War II. The era's designs are influenced by urbanization and smaller living spaces.
G Plan was launched in 1953 by visionary furniture manufacturer Donald Gomme. With an extensive range of household designs covering everything from sideboards to nest tables, G Plan was set to empower people to buy into a better way of life at home. A revolutionary concept, G Plan offered high-quality, modernist furniture with a British touch.
A typical G Plan piece of furniture is made from teak wood. Furniture made from teak wood is renowned for its durability and elegance. There are also some G Plan ranges available in rosewood, oak and mahogany.
G Plan crafted work with straight lines in the mid-century. Check the item for G Plan markings. Markings on furniture varied depending on the year it was crafted.
Alternatively, you can buy G-Plan furniture at local junk shops and charity shops.
